“Krawang’ or ‘cutwork’ is cut out lacework embellished with thread embroidery reminiscent of the Victorian ‘Broderie Anglaise’. Skilled artisans create the krawang by stretching a piece of fabric across a bamboo hoop. The design of the lace has already been silkscreen printed onto the fabric and by following these faint lines, the worker carefully builds up layer upon layer of thread embroidery before the empty areas of lace are cut away with tiny, very sharp scissors. The cutwork is then painstakingly trimmed and the article impeccably finished with a beautiful scalloped edging.
At Hippy Chic we use this technique to create alternative casual and evening wear that is elegant and comfortable. We have designed the sizing to fit real Australian women.
